The team discussed it and memes threads are not allowed. They were started as a lighthearted fun goof thread and turned into a dumpster fire.
So now memes aren’t banned, just threads dedicated to them that result in a lot that brought in topics against the rules. You’re still free to post a meme in reply toxany post as long as it’s not an inappropriate one or banned topics.

I have to put in my two cents (which will amount to nothing). The meme threads gave me some of the most needed hilarity I 've had since being here, and life can suck so having a place to go for something funny had become a very welcome respite from a world that is often hard. I’ve seen things that amused me, occasionally repulsed me, bored me, but I’m an adult and I can decide how I want to feel about material presented to me. I don’t know if it’s more appropriate to drop random memes into other topics, as memes are mostly humorous and so not fit for serious discussion. To me it makes more sense to have a meme thread, where the caveat can be “WARNING: HUMOR. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK”. Coz we’re all big boys and girls, and the big bad world isn’t going to rush down and destroy us, right? So a little humor isn’t going to do it then, huh? So banning meme threads seems to me like hand-holding for people who are going to be exposed to exponentially worse examples in the real world, and equally bad examples in private media as well. Anyway this has gone on long enough, let people’s minds decide, banning memes removes the good from the people who shouldn’t have been exposed to begin with.
I wosh @Bowens had kept his comment up. It summed it all up well.
Basically, this forum isn’t about hand holding. It also isn’t about memes. Memes are not a support service ever promised by the site.
While violence and politics can be funny, we all have a dark side, we’re just not going to allow memes that break the basic site rules. And the thread became basically nothing but that.
If you want to see memes, there are meme dumps all over the internet. This site is not one.

Whoops, sorry. Felt I may have been interfering with a comment directed at you. Didn’t want to step on toes.
To sum up my comments:
Basically, I just said that it had gone from humor to a lot rule breaking stuff, including violence, politics, conspiracies theories, promoting drugs, promoting delusions etc. Then I cited some specific examples of really bad memes which had been posted recently, which really don’t need to be brought up again.
