POLL: Does this food get spicy?

Hey guys. Recently had a few conversations that are making me question life. When I eat a lot of certain foods, they make my mouth burn as though I ate too many salt and vinegar chips. I always thought it was because these foods are acidic, but recent evidence suggests that it might be just me.

Can you guys click on any of the foods that cause the same type of burning feeling in your mouth?

  • carrot
  • celery
  • lettuce
  • spinach
  • onion
  • bell pepper
  • avocado
  • tomato
  • apple
  • kiwi
  • strawberry
  • pineapple
  • orange
  • cherry
  • lemon
  • grape
  • walnut
  • almond
  • hazelnut

That’s a sign of allergy.

I don’t need this kind of negativity around here :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

But yeah, I am going to have to accept that. Google says most likely culprit is birch pollen :sob:

Pineapple actually has an emzyme in it that eats away at your mouth.

I get this burning with very little of certain things, walnut for example, and i eat it anyway

I don’t really get a burning when I eat salt and vinegar chips.
I do get it from pineapple, mango and kiwi if I eat them raw, but that’s due to allergies.

Do you have any pollen allergies?
Perhaps look into if the food items you get the burning from, are on the list of known cross-reactions for the pollen?

Dr. Google tells me I likely have a birch pollen allergy, and that the foods I react to contain proteins that are very similar to the protein in birch pollen. When my allergies get bad, I am more likely to have an intense reaction to these foods. Cooking the food should supposedly denature the protein enough that it won’t bug me. Gonna wait until my current symptoms die down before I try it, though.

3 of the 7 food items I’m allergic to, lose their power if they’re cooked or processed, so that makes a lot of sense
