I think institutions, if done right and free of stigma, can be a very good thing for this country. We badly need better mental health care like many other countries. We can step up and be a world leader in the field if we do this right, and with our humanity intact.

I believe there is a definite need for those with Schizophrenia that don’t respond very well to medications, and definitely can’t look after themselves or would be at risk of abuse by others (eg. getting addicted on drugs, having their money thieved). However, the majority of cases don’t need this sort of intervention, they just need quality mental health care in the community and in hospitals for when acute mental health episodes occur.

I don’t know about the USA, but in the UK community mental health care has been a good idea hampered by decades of serious underfunding .

In terms of people needing hospitalisation sometimes a bed can only be found 200/300 miles from where they live .

Yeah i hear you @firemonkey. It is very much the same here in Australia. Ongoing and serious underfunding has meant that community support for those with mental health is stretched very thin.

As this is a USA based thread it would be interesting to see how community care differs from state to state .

By institutions I think we need more hospitals and supported living
