People with schizophrenia suffer from some of the greatest prejudice, stigma, and discrimination associated with any mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health

As with most mental disorders, the causes of schizophrenia are still pretty poorly understood. Friends and family commonly are shocked, afraid or angry when they learn of the diagnosis. People often imagine a person with psychosis as being more violent or out-of-control than a person who has another kind of serious mental illness. But these kinds of prejudices and misconceptions can usually be readily corrected.

Demystification of the illness, along with recent insights from neuroscience and neuropsychology, gives new hope for finding more effective treatments for an illness that previously carried a grave prognosis.

family members and friends are afraid of people with this condition, because the symptoms can be difficult to comprehend and make sense of.

For some reason, people assume that we’re all axe-crazy spree killers. They fear us. I say don’t disclose your diagnosis unless you absolutely have to…

People with schizophrenia aren’t always in psychosis. I admit though I knew zero about this illness before I was diagnosed. I’ve spent months researching it since then.

Before schizophrenia I used associate the word psychotic to being violent. After having suffered psychotic episodes I now associate it with being out of touch with reality. I’ve never become violent during psychosis, I’ve imagined a lot of strange things but never thought about physically harming anyone other than myself.

I think a lot of people view the word psychotic that way. Most my family treats me weird. I have a few cousins who try to treat me like before. It’s a little noticeable but I’m thankful they go out of their way to try to start small talk with me.

I’ve been feeling happy lately. It may be due to speaking with my childhood friends online while playing video games. They treat me the same as before. To them I’m just one of the guys not Schizophrenic Pete.

Tell everybody everything let it be a filter to figure out who is worth getting to know.

I’m still in denial, I think I’ve got good grounds. My “delusions” simply systematise on-going metaphysical debates in (digital) society. Trees are not people but they are closer to god
