Panic attacks, how do you cope?

Like when you get a panic attack what do you do to calm yourself down? I found yesterday that listening to my music on headphones helped calm me down.

I’m no prescribed any benzos, so it gets pretty tough when I have panic attacks.

I get them in public…so I walk around Walmart blaring metal music…it puts me in my own space…music doth calm thy beasts…

Deep breathing helps too…

I get mine after I go out in public. Like I get home and can’t stop thinking about all the suspicious stuff I saw.

I find that deep breathing helps me too. I’ve also been listening to my portable a.m./f.m. radio when I walk around. It all helps.

I defeated all panic attacks and anxiety…how? by telling myself “it just doesn’t matter” if I have a panic attack…it’s all a mental game really…the moment that you can tell yourself you don’t care if you have a panic attack is when they will all go away…good luck…I know it’s not easy.

I lay down on my bed and wait till its time to take the medication. Then i take the medication and usually within an hour i feel better.

If that doesnt wirk i take more medication.

Prayers to God, deep breathing and positive self-talk. Music also helps - if I have my phone and earphones at hand!

Panic spikes when it does…sometimes no clear reason. So I wait for it to settle down on its own. My reaction in the past would be to go somewhere quiet for the time it lasts.

An observation helped me: the emotional saddle of your brain (the limbic system) goes into overdrive, way beyond just fear and the “flight or fight” mode. You feel sadness, guilt, concern over the future, and hatred about what is happening to you. It’s best to try to calm the physical stuff first when your nerves get shot by taking a breather. Then, deal with the emotional side of things by finding something to hold on to no matter how insignificant: a memory, a hope, something to look forward to. Don’t be too overwhelmed by all the emotions. They will pass and you will eventually feel better again. Remember that.

I take a prn, and try to relax. Sometimes talking to someone or doing an activity to distract myself. Most of the time I suffer until I fall asleep.

I usually suffer until I am asleep also. Sometimes I get ‘anxiety hangovers’ as I call them. It’s when my panic attack and anxiety carries over into the next morning. It’s rather terrible.

Sorry you get anxiety hangovers, do you take any meds for your panic attacks?

When I get panic attacks it could be brought on by a number of things but it’s usually when I’m in an uncomfortable situation. My doc has me do deep breathing, take 40mg of benedryl or put an ice pack on the back of my neck. My panic attacks are horrible. Lights shine more brightly, peoples eyes look like they can see right through me, my movements are more aware like twitchy. I hate it.

Thank you. I take hydroxyzine as a prn. Often times it doesn’t work though.

Also feel people’s eyes can go right thru me feel they can read my intrusive thoughts.
