The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is considered “generally safe” by the U.S Food and Drug Administration. Yet as primary care physician and co-author case study Crystal Xue, MD explained, supplemental curcumin extracts can have up to 100 percent potency, compared to less than 10 percent potency found in turmeric powders in cooking spices. The supplements’ higher potency, along with increased bioavailability (how easily the supplement is absorbed by the body), could also increase the likelihood of liver injury, the authors said.
