Narcolepsy and Psychosis

I found out that on a number of occasions narcolepsy and psychotic symptoms seem to go hand in hand. I found an interesting paper on it I thought I’d share.

Summary: 7% of all diagnosed “schizophrenics” are thought to actually have a psychotic variant of narcolepsy, which is very treatable. You’d be treated with a stimulant such as modafinil rather than an antipsychotic. (People with this misdiagnosed as sz are commonly thought to be treatment resistant because they do not respond to APs when in reality they aren’t improving because this is not an appropriate treatment for them!)

If you are constantly fatigued (not from medication), get spontaneous periods of time where you become intensely sleepy like you’ve been drugged, have experienced hallucinations upon falling asleep or waking up and/or sleep paralysis on a regular basis, as well as have disrupted sleep at night and difficult falling asleep you should look into a possible narcolepsy diagnosis. A very strong indicator is if you tend to become physically weak from strong emotions like laughter (ie knees buckle or someone tells you your jaw seems to go slack when you laugh), but not everyone with narcolepsy gets this.
