My start-up support group

Hey guys, i spoke to the head of a local charity recently, we have a good rapport, we discussed my ambitions to start up a support group wit them and we made a date for the opening in Feb,

I will design a poster and distribute flyers for this, i was a bit worried we might get loads of people coming at the start bc of the advertising, if it takes off then i think a booking system would be appropriate. I am really looking forward to it.

I have some training in mental health btw despite my illness, i was able to study social care and intro to counselling lv 6 (undergrad)

i also have a ot of experience and i have facilitated groups before with supervision so i think I’ll be fine, the guy in charge will be there anyway if i need any help.

Congratulations on your start up !!

I did a screening of each person before letting them join to make sure it was within the scope of what I could handle considering I’m not a professional therapist. I was a minister. (I’m no longer a minister though).

If their issues were too severe, I had a list of therapists I liked and trusted and referred the people to them.

Sometimes the therapist would determine the person could do both, and in that case I let them join.

We worked through a workbook together to help keep us on track and have things to focus and work on to help us improve and get better.

Hope this helps!

oh, that’s very in-depth, I’m just opening it up to anyone, not as a therapist but just to chat/ discuss/ play games, its not too serious, people who need further help would be sign posted to the right places.

its interesting the various different approaches.

I started screening people after having a girl who was in trouble for stalking people and causing semi trucks to crash on highways for fun. I kid you not. She became obsessed with me and I had to go to the police and found all that out. I decided then and there I’d be more careful.

Wow, that’s crazy, we don’t get anything like that here.

I would be supervised though, in-case anything was too much for me,

Thanks, I’m usually pretty good talking with people, it might also lead to a permanent job, i am hoping i can get further training, just hope my fatigue doesn’t get worse, i have been really struggling lately, I’ve not been able to get out and about as much.

I can understand the frustration over the fatigue. My meds make me sleep a long time at night. So because I close st work and take my meds after, I can’t open because I’m too tired to get up.

Getting training is very helpful. I recommend also getting training in learning how to calm down tense situations, also known as de-escalation.

Thanks Ribbit, i appreciate that, i really do want to help my community, I’ve been a lot more community driven since starting my radio show during covid, i had local charities and people on my show talking about what they do etc, i shared it in the local private Facebook group with the community as well.
