hey guys my doctor said i had paranoid schizophrenia but google says thats an outdated term since 2013. should i get a new psychiatrist? i just think people are out to get me, socially and then physically. is that maybe just schizotypal disorder? i guess what im asking is can you experience schizophrenia without voices?
Yes. You can be schizophrenic without voices.
I’m diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and don’t hear voices.
in my opinion the type of schizophrenia doesnt really matter wether it paranoid or anything else its still schizophrenia. and yes you can be schizophrenic without having auditory hallucinations (voices) i am schizoohrenic and dont have voices instead i have tactile hallucination and delusions and cognition impairment. last thing stay with your current psychiatry doctor and trust him.
do you have another type of hallucination? i dont
No I don’t either.
It took a while to admit to myself I had delusions and some sort of grandomania, no halucinations.
@sakippo , must be a reason why they think you got sz. What did they say?
I have schizophrenia and don’t hear voices. I was also diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia past the date when the term supposedly became obsolete.
well she thinks i hear voices from last year, i forgot to tell her i lied about that because of my delusions. so next time ill tell her and see if my diagnosis changes. its just that my next appointment is in a month.
The name use doesn’t really matter, some psychiatrists just call it by the older term because that’s what they learned to call it. Usually they do keep up to date with the illness in order for treatments sake.
The diagnostic classes are outdated now for some reason maybe because they determined it was a single phenomenon with different symptoms. Im not sure. But they can still call a spade a spade, a paranoid schizo or disorganized, phobic, anxious, delusional. The outdaed category is some sort of thing on their end, on our end the terms are still used
I was diagnosed with schizoaffective, and my first episode I was not hallucinating, I was only delusional. When I got off my meds 3 years later, the episode was worse. I started to hallucinate on top of the delusions
The only thing they are tring to get is your paranoia and delusions with meds.
As far as I saw the pdocs are not too concern about diagnosis, they look for sz than see how it evolves.
I wanted to change my diagnosis and doctor as meds are not apropiate , but you never know what you trade them for.
Do you know what the new term is for schizophrenia? I never heard it was outdated
I get paranoid that people are plotting against me. In my experience, they don’t really use subtypes. They could if they wanted to. If I looked in my medical records/notes, the diagnosis would say SZ or SZA. There probably wouldn’t be subtypes. They’re more concerned about chemical imbalance, not so much about unnecessary labels.
If they say you have Paranoid Schizophrenia, they are just concerned about your paranoia and want to focus on that.
Paranoia covers a lot of ground and it can be very subtle. I think I’m paranoid sz and don’t hear voices. I do suffer the paranoia and have for as long as I can remember.
These days it’s more based on treatment and thus why the classifications have changed. Depending where you are there’s more emphasis on mood as well as the sz symptoms but it’s still the same beast. You’ll also find that diagnosis can change with time and treatment so it’s not such a big thing to put labels on it.
Could be. How familiar are you with the symptoms of schizophrenia? Do you have negative or cognitive symptoms?
i have hygiene issues but i was able to do well in my writing courses while off medication for a while. the issue is social, but i do experience paranoia and begin to think bizarre things.
Schizophrenia can definitely have subtypes maybe she is only using the term to best approach your symptoms
