My psychiatrist is so mean

Every time I go in, he has to be a jerk about my asking him questions. Today I had a question about my dosage and he made me feel small and ashamed for even asking him anything. I can’t stop thinking about this. How do I cope?

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask questions of your doctor. I know I’m lucky and stumbled into a very good one but I realise not every psydoc is great with patients. Don’t feel silly. It’s perfectly ok to ask questions and he needs to deal with it. Be nice and it’s all good. Make him play your game. Just stay relaxed and don’t obsess about it. It’s not your fault.

Some psychiatrists have aggravating personalities. That doesn’t really matter. They only need to know the right meds to prescribe you. You don’t have to like them. In my experience, the most capable psychiatrists also tend to be the most aggravating.

As long as you have a therapist or counselor you trust, and you are happy with your meds, that’s about all you can ask for.

If your psychiatrist did anything inappropriate, like yell at you, you can always report him.

Meanness is something you always get in life. Toughen up and learn to see through it. Or be so happy go lucky and oblivious that nothing ever upsets you! This is how I am, especially on meds. Off meds I’m a real pessimist.

You don’t have to feel ashamed to ask questions. It is your health and mind, you should be able to ask questions. Do what you need to to get your questions answered.

I need to take anti-anxiety meds (propranolol) to talk to my psychiatrist. He makes me very anxious. I don’t know why. I also wear ear plugs to his office because he has too many echos in there. It is really bare with a high ceiling.

He’s the only one around. But I guess it is what it is.
