My pet favorite stem cell research

So, my analysis, not the articles’: Look to see stem cell trials in Parkinsons in as soon as a few years, and schizophrenia after that. Parkinsons is a bitch, but sz is more complicated. However, much of the issue with beginning human trials of stem cells for therapeutic use is with the generation and placement of the cells, and that is something they are making progress on every month.

This ■■■■ is crazy! If they open my skull up to fix this problem I better come out with a clear mind and no need for meds. Not some last ditch effort like they do for ALS.

There’s too much speculation and uncertainty here. It sounds like they have a better chance of putting a man on Mars then they do landing stem cells in the right spot. I personally like the inflamation theory. It’s practical, I understand it, and it sounds fixable with modern medicine.
Not this futuristic macguyver approach to nuerosurgery that I’m reading about here.

That’s the idea! Well, I can’t say it’s close for sz yet. But they are doing trials on ALS right now at Cedars Sinai. The (ALS) stem cell treatment is into the spine, not the brain. There are no stem cell trials today for Parkinsons, they’re just working out how to place the cells. I think they’re not going to have to open the skull, they’re going to use MRI to guide placement.

It just blows my mind the stuff humanity can do. Sometimes we’re such morons but other times we’re brilliant.

If they can fix it with a pill, that’s obviously better. Much less invasive.

I’m guessing it’ll be more complicated, but who knows. There just seems to be too much going on. Interneurons, spiny neurons that aren’t spiny enough, dopamine dysfunction, glutamate toxicity, micro and macro scale structural problems, under or over expression of genes, enzymes, complicated! It’s like brain surgery

Hopefully those pills will be along sooner and keep us on an even keel til we get that Star Trek style cure.

I thought it was for Sz…!!! Any ways thanks for sharing…!!!

@far_cry0, one therapy paves way for another as technical problems solved overlap. so any progress is step closer. I agree it would have been great if all four groups would be working on SZ though…

Great, glad this is continuing to progress.

If it’s safe and successful in Parkinson’s, that will open up stem cell therapy possibilities for many more illnesses.

It’ll be easier to attract research funding too, after early successes.
