Lithium causes permanent damage to the thyroid gland in the long run. It’s your choice though.

Even at low doses? She told me it didnt at low doses

I feel like even a low dose would negatively affect the thyroid gland.

You can always get bloods tested on the regular to be sure you’re Ok.

Also, I thought lithium was for mania?

Yeah my pdoc wants me to try it. There like “we know it damages your thyroid, we know that. But thats why we monitor it.”

Lol wow you monitor it thats a relief, atleast i will know when its damaged

I was told it pulls up the depressive side and lowers the manic side basically reducing the high and also reducing the low

It’s definitely worth a try. I would love my pdoc to recommend this to me for those reasons.

Lithium also augments the effects of most psych meds. It’s the reason sometimes lithium is combined with clozapine in super med resistant cases

I was on lithium for several years
It gave me hypothyroidism and diabetes
The stuff is toxic

It’s your call though @Rainstorm

Back in the turn off the century. They used to have Hot Springs lithium bath. Houses where you can go and soak for the day. Made to cure lots of mental illness, they said. It was a growing business. I wonder if There are any of them around still.

Damn it… this pdoc appointment is causing mayhem in my household. I told my Mom I didnt want to try it and shes been yelling at me all day… I dont think a mood stabilizer is going to help my schizophrenia/OCD symptoms and I really dont feel like trying a new med right now.

Usually for mood stabilising like in Bipolar. For psychosis, never heard of that.

Lithium is primarily used for bipolar but it’s sometimes used for schizophrenia because of its strong antidepressant effects.

If you ask me the numerous side effects from lithium don’t make it a worthwhile medication to be on

But discuss with your doctor

I tried the supplement form and my thoughts were slow cloudy and dumb. Also my thyroid and throat were very sore, I couldn’t smoke for days otherwise my throat would kill

That’s the supplement though, the prescription lithium might be different
