My first ever psychiatrist appointment

Is upcoming at the end of May. What can I generally expect? I hope he or she can change my meds and get me feeling better.

How are you on meds if you haven’t been seeing a pdoc?

You have insight so it should go pretty smoothly. Without insight a schizophrenic would think that the psychiatrist appointment is some kind of test to be inducted into secret society or something ridiculous like that.

Just be honest and tell them everything.

Huh? My family doc has been prescribing me mental meds for years. I’m seeing an actual psychiatrist for the first time ever.

Oh ok. Just wondered. Your appointment should go pretty smooth. Just a bunch of questions to answer. That’s been my experience. the more open and honest with them you are, the better. Hope it goes well for you.

If you are going to see this person regularly part of the first few sessions will be getting to know each other a little bit. You’ll kind of be feeling each other out to see if you like each other or kind of learning a little bit of what you will be talking about. There will be unknowns for both of you.

Yeah, honesty is important but you don’t have to spill your guts or reveal certain things about yourself or tell him everything the first visit. It’s a first meeting, it shouldn’t be a heavy meeting the first time. Save embarrassing or crazy stuff for when you know him better. Don’t walk in the first visit and tell him you are the reincarnation of Colonel George Custer and this time around you are going to win the battle of Little Big Horn. Don’t tell him your uncle teaches piano to orangutans 5 nights a week. Save that stuff for later.

It shouldn’t be that bad. Shrinks are in the people business because they are empathetic and sensitive to other peoples feelings and go through years and years of school and training because they want to help people and they are good at it. He/she is not going to attack you personally, they are basically trained to not freak out about weird things people tell them, they’ve heard it all. Just relax and don’t sweat it.

It helps to make a list of symptoms so you remember what is going on. I forget everything as soon as I get in his office.

if you tell them everything they will be more accurate in getting you the right help.

As others have said make a list of your symptoms and be 100% honest with them.
