For anyone who is unfamiliar with silencing, a silenced user can still track topics, respond to PMs, message staff, and stay logged in. They cannot post publicly or initiate PMs with non-staff members. Many people like the silencing feature as a way to take a break without cutting themselves off from support should the need arise.
