Mental illness and neurobiological correlates in the transgender population

I watched a documentary last night on Netflix called Gender Revolution. It was very informative on intersex, gender identity, gender expression, and related topics. I highly recommend it.

Hopefully the entire documentary will be released on the internet in the near future.

I’m watching in chunks due to attention span. Just seen the bit about Gingerbread person and the ‘man cross’ and ‘girl cross’ in terms of crossing legs. I’ve always automatically done the latter but can everything really be related to gender?

@firemonkey

Do you mean gender expression?

Yeah, just about everything.

I guess so. Can every emotional and physical action be related to gender? To me crossing my legs the way I do is just part of who I am.

@firemonkey

I really don’t know the answer to your question.

Gender identity, expression, non-binary, agender, etc., are such new concepts to many people (including myself). I’m a cisgender male, but I feel it’s important that I educate my self as to gender identity. The suicide-attempt rate (including suicide) is nearly 50% for people who are not cisgender, and unemployment is twice the national average (4 times the national average for non-cisgender people of color).

Well, I have to get off of the computer. It’s been nice chatting with you, @firemonkey

I’m talking about this on a Facebook neurodivergence group. Some of the things I’ve said :

Re my interest. Here is something I wrote on a mental heath forum about a year ago "For me it’s very hard separate out what might have been an aspergic/delusional obsession vs a deep, legitimate desire to change sex.
I do know my psych records describe me at one point as having schizophrenia with disorder of gender identity. .

Over the years I have thought less about it but wonder how much this was due to the (a) reduction of an aspergic obsession (b) It was a delusional obsession that lessened as I became less acutely ill (c) A protective psychological mechanism to the reality that gender reassignment would not be something I would ever get the go ahead for.

One of the first pdocs I had later became head of the Charing cross gender identity clinic"

Another factor for me was the issue of being able to live successfully as a woman in terms of the practical/social imp- lications of that vs any innate desire. Whilst fully accepting there are plus points to being neurodivergent it has to also be accepted that there are aspects that can impair our ability to function in society. As a person I have always struggled in social and practical terms. That wasn’t going to magically change if I ever got to transition.

I am not sure I was ever totally happy with my gender assignment but more resigned to the very strong possibility that due to my mental health problems SRS was unlikely to be sanctioned. Also when younger and perhaps more ill/less self aware I didn’t consider so much how I would cope with the practical/social aspects of it all. Ultimately when we transition we aim to live in our chosen role but also to live as discreetly and successfully in that role as possible. I am greatly aware that my difficulties related to my neurodivergence would have impacted negatively on that ability.

Perhaps they wouldn’t stop you just for being neurodivergent but being neurodivergent might make it difficult to live discreetly and successfully as you would prefer. I guess it would depend on how adversely your neurodivergence affected you. I guess also with me the fact that I have rather severe avoidant tendencies/social phobia also plays into things. The thought of being laughed at and ridiculed because I was struggling to pass successfully as a woman is very anxiety/stress provoking.
