A groundbreaking discovery has highlighted lithium—a drug long used to treat bipolar disorder and depression—as a potential therapy for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This research, conducted by a team at the Center for Synaptic Brain Dysfunctions within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) led by Director KIM Eunjoon, reveals that lithium can restore brain function and alleviate behavioral symptoms in animal models of ASD caused by mutations in the Dyrk1a gene.
I’m a bit skeptical lithium is a old medicine and ASD and bipolar disorder are capable of being diagnosed together why would they make this discovery now not 50 years ago
Idk but if it helps then good
I thought the same thing. There’s been a couple recent discoveries that are kind of similar. Like keppra for negs. Plenty of people have epilepsy and schizophrenia.
Why are people downing it? If it works, great!
I was thinking the same thing. Besides, I don’t believe it works for autism.
What would I need therapy for? I function in all of the areas I need to.
I was on lithium from 1982- 2002.
I know you’ve said you’re on the spectrum. Did you notice any benefits in that regard?
I don’t understand. The post wasn’t specifically aimed at you.
None at all re symptoms I now know to be autism related.
I have ASD so it is aimed at me.
Yea but your not the only person on here with it.
I am shocked to learn this.
I guess I interpreted you announcing the fact that your functioning fine without any meds for the autism as the article not having any potential value.
Every so often people ask me how happy I would be if there was a treatment that would fix my autism? It’s not a problem for me. I view it as an enhancement. Can we get a treatment that makes neurotypicals I don’t know stop trying to start conversations with me? That is the higher priority in my books.
Something that fixes the negatives of my SZ would be fxxxing amazing. I’d line up for that shxx.
That’s awesome but there are people out there who have a much more severe form of it or maybe just people who have a less severe form who really struggle with it. I think the article mentions a specific gene so maybe this becomes a targeted therapy.
How to help improve the lives of those who are level 3, while not destroying the strengths of very high functioning autistic persons like @anon82948922. We are not a stage that that can be guaranteed.
