man, it’s been a long time since I listened to my Led Zeppelin. I kind of burned myself out on some of their stuff. but tonight I listened to “Achilles Last Stand” on the Presence album…awesome stuff. @77nick77 was it you who played the Spirit version of the melody of “stairway to heaven”? Jimmy Page plays his own endearing version of the melody on the guitar, and the rest of the song doesn’t even have anything to do with the initial melody really so it’s Led Zeppelin’s song still I think. what do you think?
The two guitar intros are very similar. And the fact that Spirit opened for Zeppelin makes it seem like it is too big of a coincidence to not be plagerized. Yes, many artists have riffs or melodies that are borrowed and changed to a certain bands version. I read that Led Zeppelin was notorious for “borrowing” lyrics or music and than putting their own stamp on it. Let the lawyers battle it out in court as whether it’s plagerisim or not.
When George Harrison was sued for plagerizm for “My Sweet Lord” he lost the case. But the judge decided that he had not done it delibrately but he had unconsciously plagerized the girl groups song. So in a small way, Harrison was vindicated a little in the decision.
In the Harrison case it was for the best because he was rich already and the girls made money too. I heard Harrison’s manager got canned over it too because he was skimming the situation or some shiz
Ironically, “My Sweet Lord” was Harrison’s biggest post-Beatle hit.
I disagree…George had “give me love” and some others I think. “My Sweet Lord” was really big though I don’t know really.
I checked Wikipedia and a few other sites. I’ll put it this way. It is arguably Harrisons biggest and best post-Beatle single. Most websites seem to suggest it was his most successful single without coming right out and saying it.
I am pretty sure the christian community grabbed onto it too. Even though they chant “hari krishna” over and over at the end of the song.
