Laughter on your own

I know I am weird for doing this, but apparently the majority of people don’t laugh if they are watching a comedy show alone. I laugh anyway and always have, but apparently most people laugh for social approval. I was shocked to find out that laughter on your own is abnormal.

I reckon that is pretty sad, as surely if something is funny, you laugh, right? Apparently people don’t.

Do you?

I’m even more sad for humanity if this is true. Seems hard to believe. If something’s funny, I laugh. And if it’s really funny, I laugh a lot. And sometimes I’ll say something about how funny it was, even if I’m by myself.
I don’t stop there, if someone says something on tv that I disagree with or believe is wrong, I’ll argue loudly… whether anyone else is in the room or not.
My reactions to things are genuine, and never for anyone else.

I rarely laugh at anything. But if you’re laughing at comedy, that a really good sign in my opinion.

Is that true? I laugh sometimes when funny thoughts enter my head. Maybe it’s a sign of being crazy.

“Laughter was 30 times more frequent in social than solitary situations. The students were much more likely to talk to themselves or even smile when alone than to laugh. However happy we may feel, laughter is a signal we send to others and it virtually disappears when we lack an audience.”

It is interesting. Let us see by the responses whether those who laugh on their own happen to coincide with szs.

It might even be a precursor to sz.

That’s remarkable. It really might be associated though. I’m 40 and went crazy at 25,so I can’t clearly remember how much I did it before, but I find it very strange to think people don’t even hang up the phone after hearing something funny and laugh some more. Now that I think about it, I remember staying up late by myself when I was young during the summer and having my mother come downstairs and tell me that I’d woken her up laughing and wanted to know what I was laughing about.

That is odd to think other people don’t do that.

When I first heard about it, I was genuinely shocked. I thought it was extremely odd too…

I don’t even have to be watching anything to laugh. I also talk to myself and the people in my head quite a bit. My boyfriend says I’m “pretty crazy” because of it lol.

But did you laugh on your own to say a comedy program on tv while alone before you got ill?

I’m not sure. My illness started when I was very young.

Do you laugh out loud at TV comedy while alone?[poll type=multiple min=1 max=2]

  • Yes

I laugh alone! I can’t help it. If something is funny, you laugh, it’s natural … I’m surprised by this study.

It’s amazing isn’t it? But no, we are abnormal for doing it. It hoenstly might be a sign of sz, but we love life without social convention.

I laugh alone, sometimes I laugh out loud because I just thought of something funny. It has to be a pretty good day for that though.

I laugh more when others are laughing though, because like yawning, it’s contagious.

I definitely laugh out loud to comedy when I am by myself. I always have. I also laugh at internal jokes (jokes “they” put in my head) when I am by myself. I love being entertained with comedy.

I don’t really laugh, whether I’m with people or alone. I just smile when I find something funny. Blunted affect, maybe? I don’t know, but I’ve been this way for a very long time. I’ve chalked up my inability to laugh to having been through too much, like the excessive childhood trauma, considering I laughed like a normal kid when I was very young, before the bad stuff started happening to me.

Yet when it comes to movies comedies are my favorite.
