Just got a script for Metformin

I told my doctor that metformin might help me loose weight so hes letting me try a low dose of 500mg once daily for 3 months.
Has anyone else lost weight on a low dose like this?

I’m on metformin for high blood sugar from abilify. It seems to decrease your appetite for about the first month, then it doesn’t. Or maybe I’ve just gotten used to my reduced appetite. Not sure. I’m on 1500mg.

My doctor hooked me up with a dietician to lose weight. And it’s working.

I lost a lot of weight for the about the first 6 months of starting Metformin - then the weight loss stopped.

Metformin s a good drug to be on, even if its not for blood sugar control.

Actually, thinking about it, I think I’ve just gotten used to my decreased appetite. I’m currently eating 2000 calories a day and I doubt I’d be able to do that without metformin.

Sounds good guys, @everhopeful @Vertigo may i ask what dose your on? and how much did you loose?
Im prediabetic but not diabetic my doctor didnt really wanna give me metformin but i convinced him lol, do you think 500mg will have any effect in weight loss or will i need more?

I’m on a calorie controlled diet and seeing a dietician that my doctor hooked me up with, so that has resulted in me losing about 33lb so far. Nothing to do with metformin.

But now that I need to consume 2000 calories a day max, I feel metformin is helping.

I’d definitely recommend asking your doctor about a dietician.

I’m on 1500mg metformin.

@everhopeful A dietician would be good all tho i dont know if there funded in my country i dont work so i wouldnt be able to afford one,
Did your dietician give you any helpful websites that you could pass on to me?

I weight 110kg need to get back down to my pre risperdal weight of 75-80, how much more weight do you need to loose?

Come to think about it, I am still managing to lose some weight, but I also watch my calories and walk everyday - but maybe it’s easier for me to lose with Metformin.

I am on 2000 mg of Metformin.

If you have pre diabetes, going to 1000 mg is not unheard of - see how you do with 500mg first.

Good luck @Opus

Thanks @Vertigo I really wanna loose some weight I just find it hard with the negative symptoms but im not going to make any excuse most people in the world find it hard to loose weight no matter if there on meds or not.
Do you know any website to learn about calorie intake i havnt really looked into it

No I don’t, but you can look it up.

I do allow some carbs but try to stay under 2000 calories a day.

I also pace (walk) for about an hour a day.

Nice do you have a dog or anything you take on your walk?
I walk my dogs for about 20mins a day i know i should do more

I walk in my house usually, I feel more comfortable this way - I suffer from Agoraphobia and lots of anxiety/paranoia.

But I do have a dog and will also walk him.

I’m 105kg, I want to get down to about 85kg. I should be able to do it over a year. So have to lose 20kg.

Ask your doctor about the dietician , they may be funded in your area. No, they didn’t give me any websites unfortunately.

ah yes i know that feeling thats why i dont go to the gym but would love to.
What breed of dog is it? I own a pug cross griffion and a miniature schnauzer.

i lost quite a lot of weight when i started taking metformin. i’m taking the ap zyprexa and i read somewhere that metformin counters the weight-gain effect of that ap. at first i was taking 2x500mg of metformin and lost 28 pounds (about 14kg,) but that dosage was halved and i put back on 14 pounds. still it was a nice side-effect to lose some weight, i’m taking the metformin for diabetes btw (caused by the zyprexa  )
