How likely is this to happen to other people? His schizophrenia went away and he got off meds
Really I didn’t know that
What went away earlier his meds or his sz?
For most his life he was on and off meds mostly off
There is some doubt about the accuracy of his diagnosis, but quite a few people with sz are able to eventually recover and stop meds completely. And quite a few recover but still need meds. I’ve read different numbers. It depends on how you recruit participants. But it could be as much as around one out of three that, given enough time, are able to stop meds.
Two common factors are med compliance and very gradual med reduction.
My old psychiatrist said to me my symptoms should improve with age
But it took lifetime for him to recover… Maybe 20 to 30 years
My second psychiatrist told me the same thing but only because I am male. She said once men hit their 40s they tend to improve, while women tend to get worse when they hit their 40’s.
I’m 43 and my 40’s have been better than my 20’s and 30’s so maybe there is some truth to it.
I read he didn’t “recover” as in his symptoms went away completely, rather he just learned to live with it.
I’m currently med free. That’s after several years with strong APs and lots of therapy. I have mild symptoms now and learned to cope.
But this is all with support. The key to any recovery is a good support system.
How long have you been med free?
How long you took to gradually get off meds ?
And how long have you been using antipsychotics?
About 2 months. I discussed it with my team and went off my shot.
A few months. It’s important to taper. You can catch psychosis before it gets bad sometimes with tapering.
About 4 or 5 years for ap use. I forget exactly. Before going on APs i was on antidepressants
Great how old are you?
And why did you decide to stop ?
Wow med free!
Good luck @anon4362788
4 or 5 years and I’m 45. I was on antidepressants for a few years before APs. I was on the highest doses of risperdal constantly, invega, then aristada. The best medicine was Aristada, not as many side effects and I felt close to normal.
Edit, I decided to stop for a number of personal reasons. Weight gain, blood sugar too high, med induced lethargy and negatives made worse.
Thanks @Wave. I will go right back on if I have positives.
Wish you great health honey
Please keep updating your situation for us
Thanks
About the same as his level of extreme intelligence happening in the general population. In otherwords, so rarely that he’s a statistical outlier. John Nash is not a good example for we SZs to measure ourselves against.
I don’t know what the truth is, but in the biographical movie “A beautiful mind”, an aged Nash tells someone that he’s taking the newer APs now.
