Is it a crime to be schizo?

Sometimes I feel like people act like it is a crime to be schizo, especially when I speak my mind about what I am experiencing. Anyone else feel like in our society it is almost a crime to be a schizo? People act like we should be removed from society and locked up for just being ourselves, and it can be easily used against us. The consequences of being a schizo are in ways worse than a criminal penalty and results in being treated like a second class citizen and social suicide, not to mention being locked up and potentially drugged out of our minds, which can result in severe health problems as a consequence.

If you ask me, schizos have many real world reasons to be justifiably paranoid in our society. It is in many ways like being an African American. After all, the police won’t hesitate to beat us to death just like them.

Not so much a crime but can be a life long sentence.

People just fear what they don’t understand.

I recently disclosed my condition to a classmate and he urged me to tell a lot more people, for he thought i was more impressive now that he knew I am a schizophrenic. I don’t get the feeling this guy rates me as a second-class citizen. It is true that this is an educated person who knows a thing or two about schizophrenia from our classes together, so that might make a difference. I find that anyone in academia who i’ve told is quite sympathetic to my condition and it even has opened a few doors. This might be very different in other environments where people are more ignorant about the condition and are more prone to stick to their prejudices. I agree with @Dreamscape that people fear what they don’t understand. But most of the people I encounter are willing to listen when I explain and they try to understand.

my sz seems to be rather hidden and when I tell anyone about my diagnosis they couldn’t care less.

my super at work seems to be bothered by the fact that she has to work with me because I have sz. I never bother her with it but she seems to feel that it is a burden on her. she actually treats me awfully.

There is a stigma to being sz. I don’t think we can do much about that. I think it is a law that we are supposed to be given the least restrictive treatment that is appropriate for our illness. There isn’t much we can do about others not wanting to accept us. The best thing is to not think about it.

I had a schiz diagnosis in the past - now its bipolar, and even with any kind of severe mental illness label - people are going to treat you like sh*t from time to time.

My brother likes to “joke” around and disrespect me around his impressionable young teenage son - this is totally unacceptable but he likes to treat me like dirt at times - Ive been fighting back lately and sticking up for myself more - even around my nephew.

All you can really can do is ignore those people that choose to stigmatize - Frankly, I am getting a bit fed up with certain people and I am starting to find myself hating all neurotypicals because of a few bad apples.

Lets face it, being a bit different in this society is going to make you a target - its just the way it is

Focus on the good people that accept us, and write off all the others 'cos they don’t deserve your attention.

That’s what I said too, ignoring is the best thing we can. These are mean people that search how to hurt others like crimby said. We must focus on good people only, and try to be as normal as we can. When I was talking about hate, I don’ t remember who here, you or SuprisedJ or both, told me hate is a big word, but you see that they don’t deserve anything more. I’m sorry about your brother. I face being a target all my life, really have been bored of this, but I think they trick us. They always search for someone to hurt and we are an easy target, but we shouldn’t let them!

there but by the grace of god go I, schizophrenia can affect anyone, those who cast their eyes downwards when confronted by schizophrenia do so because of fear, ignorance and sensationalisation by the main steam media, despite the obvious stigma whipped up by the media I found most of the stigma Ive received is from those who work in mental health so its obvious why breaking stigma i an uphill challenge, papers like mail online like to sensationalise mental illness, ive found papers like mailonline will turn your heart into a block ice, you only have to read comments people post, I just avoid such websites and ignorance, the main stream media is just a propaganda tool for media barons and politicians anyway, i feel much happier since switching off and unplugging such sources, live your life without fear and passion, with care and support, people with schizophrenia can live full lives
