I have mixed opinions on it.
In the hospital, if someone is acutely agitated and literally attacking themselves or other people, I do believe in using medication on that specific occasion to help them calm down, because sometimes people literally cannot calm down on their own and to leave them in that state is cruel.
Now if it is long term treatment? No I do not believe in forcible medication. I think it is fine to put in a court order saying if you don’t take your meds you can’t leave the psych hospital, but everyone should have a choice whether or not to take something that can potentially give such severe side effects long term. Some of the meds i have tried i cannot even imagine what it would be like if i was forced to stay on them. Torture.

Not really. I say if you don’t want to take something you shouldn’t have to. I guess unless you get violent and the medication is the only thing that actually helps.

If I get to a point where I’m not able to make a decision thats right for me, when I don’t have the insight to know I would want to allow someone who can see things clearly to make that decision… i might put that on some legal document allowing them to do that to force the treatment when necessary. To me it’s so important to keep myself healthy not just for myself but for the people around me cos it can be difficult for them too

…if forced medication is acceptable why won’t things like lobotomies and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) be acceptable?..it gives an almost unlimited license to treat schizophrenics anyhow…

Yes. I believe they should institute scoop laws and forced medication for homeless. Get them treated and back into society. They way they live is not living at all. It’s cruel. For your standard SZ, if you fail reality testing you should be on a treatment order with forced meds.

Of course its required, we would loose more ppl otherwise from suicide and homicide.

I think it’s appropriate in cases of psychosis, because it’s a thought disorder. People with psychosis are notable to think realistically and logically and they may do something violent or suicidal due to faulty beliefs.
I don’t think it should be worded like that.
Do you consent to live in a society that chooses to help you, and requires something of you? Then this is one of the things you consent to.
