Is california that great?

Hi, as a european i keep hearing many songs that sings about how california is great and is like a heaven on earth, like red hot chilly peppers have included it in their songs and many movies take place there. Is california great or is it just a mirage.

Quite the opposite lol.

I think the Los Angeles area is fantasized about a bit, especially that’s where Hollywood movies are filmed. I think San Diego is nice that’s the only place in California I’ve been to so the only place I could truly say. Especially if you’re into beaches waves surfing and girls

I think there’s a lot of hippies in Northern California although I’ve never been there so I can’t even picture what it looks like really

Lots of drugs in California.
My best friend from my neighborhood moved to California after high school and got addicted to heroin.

Lots of liberal minded people - hippies.

It’s a beautiful State, ideal weather, ocean, mountains, valleys etc…

California is always ahead of the curve

U can predict trends based on what happens in Cali first

I’m conservative. I know a lot of people are leaving. People hate Californians because they bring their politics with them…

it’s probably nice if you have money. expensive place to live. i thought about moving to norcal and getting a trailer close to the pacific ocean. lots more hikers there, than here. i’ve visited a few times and enjoyed my stay. but didn’t stay long enough to have a solid opinion about the place. people drive much faster there i notice so i went to oregon not to deal with the traffic and was pleasantly surprised by oregon.

It is livable. That’s pretty neat. Once in awhile there is an increase in violent crime and corporate crime, crime does not discriminate here as much at the very least.

I think it is. For many years, it was said that if California was a country it would have the seventh largest economy in the world. Lots of people like California for the weather. We get heat waves but generally we have mild tempatures. We also have a lot of natural beauty all over, i.e. great beaches, beautiful mountains, famous redwood forests, lots of lakes for water sports. We have some famous national parks like Yosemite and we also have deserts like Death Valley. I could write a book about what we have here. So much entertainment, so many restaurants of every cuisine, we have everything! I mean if you compare us to most other states like Wyoming or Montana or Oregon or South Dakota our culture and our lifestyles are richer and more exotic. Anyways, I was born and raised here so I’m kind of biased to how good it is here.

The weather is nice. You need long sleeves usually after dark even in the summer. But the Pacific Ocean is always cold. Hard to enjoy the beach without a wet suit.

And it is very expensive.

I interview for a job in Los Angeles tomorrow. I lived in Southern California for 10 years. In Orange County and San Diego. They were nice places to live but you pay more for everything. Taxes, gas, milk and especially housing. It’s hard to find a nice house for less than $750,000 in SoCal. That’s a lot of money.

I really appreciate the diversity in California and that folks are generally pretty inclusive. It is also a place of great natural beauty.

It is quite expensive to live here though and the traffic is terrible.

I was born in Cali, San Diego is nice, Tahoe is great. Everywhere has good and bad, people might just notice the extremes more with Cali because there’s so many people.

Never been to California. I’ve never really considered visiting aside from wanting to see a redwood tree.

But it seems like a good place. I’d probably die if I had to drive in the traffic but that’s coming from a Minnesotan bumpkin.

When I lived in San Diego I bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle. You could drive between the cars on the interstate. I believe they called it lane sharing.

You can’t do that where I live now and it’s too damn hot to ride a motorcycle. I gotta have my ac. Sold the bike.

I love my little corner of California but it’s hardly representative of the rest of California. It’s high desert and barely populated. I’ve been all over California and find that it is beautiful and diverse and frightening. LA is hard to get around in, Hollywood is dirty, Oceanside is beautiful, Sacramento is sprawling, San Francisco is enriching, Redding is hot, they all have their good and bad but I think California is a good place.

I don’t know if the Red Hot Chili Peppers were saying that California is perfect. They also sing about the drugs they got into in Los Angeles. I am proud to be born and bred in California. What people who are not from California always say to me is how I don’t ā€œlookā€ like a Californian. I get so offended. Not everyone in California is blonde. It is multicultural as anywhere.

I holidayed once back in the noughties in between LA and San fran. Amazing bit of country and just so nice. It was good weather and it was great. It was expensive even back then so I don’t imagine that changing…outside the big cities was awesome…didn’t make the big cities although I had a lay over in LAX for an afternoon…

Yes,

California is that great.

That’s coming from someone who just had to flee their home from wildfires,

Still totally worth it.

I will say, as others have, LA isn’t so great, but the rest of California is awesome.

Oakland is dirty and there are taxes on everything from bottled products to products containing sugar. It’s worse than northern Virginia and everything’s super expensive. Still there are some great sights to see and before covid shut it all down the bar scene was great. I think a lot of it boils down to what portion of California you’re talking about, because it’s a big state.
