Might want to contact your doctor. I believe I’m dealing with this as well.
Initially this started long time ago as a coping mechanism against hunger, because I was a obese youth, but its gotten to the point where even I’m going ok, this probably isn’t healthy.
Take very small sips, I think for me, the sensation is more about having a well lubricated throat. I’m a bit sick now and its gotten even worse, but if I drink any more water I’ll really be in trouble.
Do you take anticholinergic medications? My mouth is always dry and I’m always thirsty.
For me its not dry mouth, I’ve had a medication that caused that, and was taken off it. There is some researchable stuff on schizophrenics having an increased thirst from my lazy googling. So I’m sure this is pretty honestly a real thing.
It’s a compulsion to drink. My mouth is wet not dry. I just have this overwhelming, all consuming feeling to constantly drink something. Real pain in the booty.
Take care, it can be dangerous to drink large amounts.
It’s called “polydipsia” and is very common among people with SZ
Remeber to eat a lot of salt so you don’t end up with low levels of sodium.
You should talk to your Pdoc or Gp about it.
Polydipsia is excessive thirst or excess drinking. The word derives from the Greek πολυδίψιος (poludípsios) “very thirsty”, which is derived from πολύς (polús, “much, many”) + δίψα (dípsa, “thirst”). Polydipsia is a nonspecific symptom in various medical disorders
I have talked with my doctor and she told me to just take sips like I have been doing. It’s just that it’s an all day every day thing. It’s never ending.
It could be a side effect of a medication. I have extreme thirst from my Lithium Carbonate.
But you should really contact your doctor and let them know about this. They might run some tests and/or figure that it is a side effect of your med(s).
You should at least be tested for your sodium level. If you drink a lot, you flush the salt from the body. I drink too much, about 2.5 liter, and i have a low sodium level and have to eat huge amounts of salt just to be low, but not demanding care.
Oh, so there isn’t a way to “fix it”? At least you talked to your doctor. I am constantly drinking something, all day, and even drink water in the middle of the night, every time I wake up.
I have coffee in the morning (sometimes a big mug of cold brew), lots of water, tea in the afternoon, more water, more tea in the evening, a whole lot of water in the evening, more water right before bed, and water in the middle of the night.
I’m so thirsty, but I also feel like drinking coffee and teas is a coping mechanism. Like… It makes me happy to drink something delicious, so it’s like a boost to my mood. Not always. But it is a helpful thing to make it through tough days.
Thanks people for the awesome advice…I’m a work in progress.
Im with you guys i havent found a solution im drinking 2 gallons of water a day. I have an electrolite solution so that my minerals dont get flushed out but man does it make me use the restroom all night, super annoying.
Super duper annoying
My wife is an alcoholic but on the rare occasion she isn’t drinking beer she always has a cup of water or unsweetened tea with her. Can’t leave the house or go anywhere without something to drink.
I don’t really know the reason. Usually she has a beer though.
I have a compulsion for beverages as well. I always watch my electrolytes and salts so I don’t become imbalanced. But yeah, craving a beverage (water/coffee/soda) is definitely an all day thing for me too.
