There are 2 things that brought this topic on. The thread about attention span I read early this morning and the two kids walking by a few minutes ago my dog was barking at out the window.
These kids were completely oblivious to their surroundings. Did not even look up to see the dog in the window barking furiously, and quite loudly I might add, at them. They were both bent over their phones to such a degree that they looked like they may have had some form of spinal deformity.
They arent the only ones. At Christmas, the entire family of my sisters and her husbands kids , are on the phone practically the whole time. Including her and and her husband. This amounts to like 9 people tip tapping away on thier phones.
I read that the attention span of the average person is constantly decreasing because of stuff like this. I think it said it was half what it was in 2000, or something like that.
I’ll be dead, but in a couple generations, maybe less, the human race will be more like small rodents, going “Oh whats this smell over here, whats that over there, how about this in the corner”, once every second or so.
There are some of the youth that don’t want part of it, that vow to go a year without a smartphone, etcetera. But they aren’t many.
Who knows what will happen in the future. I don’t think it’s unthinkable though that society will remove themselves from staring into screens, but not any time soon it looks like.
I think that the transformation into hamsters is wildly optimistic… it’s probably gonna be more like gnats or rocks, but I don’t want to insult them, either.
I work with high schoolers – they NEVER look up from their phones. Don’t get me wrong, I look at my phone too when we are very slow. But these kids are absolutely GLUED to their phone screens. I can’t imagine trying to be a school teacher and trying to teach 30+ students who are tied up in their phones. And ALLOWED to be in their phones. Anyways, rant over. Enjoy being a bunch of hamsters, kiddos.
People have legitimately been killed while crossing a street because they were on their phones and not watching for traffic. In our state there is now a law that it is illegal to drive while holding a phone. Doesn’t stop people though.
