So I’m writing a book to take a break from writing a book. Makes sense, right?
It’s a how-to book on the clothing of medieval Europe. It has patterns showing how to draft out the garment pieces on the fabric, diagrams showing an approximation of what the finished product should look like, step by step instructions on how to sew the garment, and a brief history of each garment along with suggestions for embellishments and what fabric to use.
The writing style is a bit tongue-in-cheek, and it’s aimed at people who already know how to sew. It’s separated into time periods, then gender, then garments. The idea is that you can open it up to the time period you want, and construct a full outfit for that time period. It’s more about comfort and convenience than hard core historical accuracy, but I’m trying to keep things as close as possible to the actual garments from that time.
I’ve been working on it for a day and a half, and I’m already a quarter of the way through it, including diagrams. I don’t think it’ll go that quickly for the rest of it, as I get closer to the renaissance, the garments get more elaborate. But I’m gonna keep at it until it’s done, and hopefully get it published by the end of the year!
