I'm somewhat of a real cowboy deep down...still a city boy though

I worked two years on my mom’s cattle ranch when my step dad was still able to run a farm…had to learn to seperate cows…watch Don “preg check” cows…they called him Doc because he was so accurate in his preg checks…amazing cowboy…I learned a lot…putting them in the chute so you can spray the non fly stuff on their backs, fixing misbirths with the calfs by pulling them out…it goes on and on…a lot to do on a cattle farm…my favorite part was feeding them soy cake in the feeder on the back of the truck…you just flip a little switch on the left of the dashboard and the feeder starts trickling soy cake out of it while you “troll” the path slowly while the feed goes down in a straight line, you count to fifteen and then shut off the switch…that’s enough feed for twenty head , which is how we kept them divided by herd.

The only part of the cowboy life I liked was driving the big tractors. Sticking my arm into a cow’s backside, not so much. Very happy to be back living in a mid-sized town.

I met a real cowboy once and took him to a library. I was embarrassed because I don’t think he’d been to one.

My grandpa was like a real life cowboy. But he didn’t call himself a cowboy. He called himself a farmer and a businessman. He owned a farm where he grew crops and raised cattle and other livestock. He also owned a popular ice cream franchise in a nearby city near his farm. My grandpa was also a part time carpenter as a hobbyist. He lived to be 93 years old.
