Thats my question…I really wish I didn’t have to.
Antipsychotics are mood stabilizers also there used for depression they seriously need to call it something different seriously
Yes, only if you experience psychosis as a symptom
I carried the bipolar diagnosis many times over the years and was prescribed antipsychotics because I would become psychotic during my manic and mixed phases
Antipsychotics are also powerful mood stabilizers, controlling mania and depression
So they play 2 roles.
Act as an antipsychotic and act as a mood stabilizer.
If you’ve ever had psychosis then you might need an antipsychotic but I’m not sure for how long. You’ll have to talk to your psychiatrist about that.
Ugh it’s frustrating. I was hoping if it’s just bipolar I can get off them but having experienced two I don’t think I ever will and will need to make peace with having to take them for the rest of my life.
Just a thought maybe they will find a med that will treat all your issues with one med
If that happens maybe it’s a good thing even if they call it a “antipsychotic” I hate the name also but for me psychosis never ends off of meds even with some of the antipsychotic medication I hear voices 24/7 365 days a year never stops ever without haldol ever my mood changes a lot from elated to depressed idk I’ve been told by a massive amount of doctors and therapists that I have a “a thought and separate mood disorder” again idk I think it’s all psychosis with severe depression but theY think it’s bipolar and me and my sister have similar symptoms she’s got schizoaffective disorder diagnosis
Abilify works for me at 10mg. It’s the only one I take. It’s got rid of positive and negatives but I still have autism , possibly ADHD so I still struggle… The only reason I sometimes wonder if it’s just bipolar is cos I went 10 years without symptoms before the doc tried to help me get off my meds …but I relapsed cos I went off them but started taking antidepressants when I did. It caused me to have my second psychosis. Currently im 4 years in remission.
It’s ok @anon25873142
I understand your frustration
I’m going through a similar situation related to these meds
I had bipolar for 15 years and didn’t take an antipsychotic. I took welbutrin and depakote all through college for it, that was all.
The fantasy of having bipolar instead of schizophrenia is very rarely true, bipolar is much less problematic than sz/sza.
Yes. You probably, in all likelihood would still be taking an antipsychotic with a Bipolar diagnosis. Especially if you get psychotic when you are manic.
