I ruined dinner

I was waiting for the eight hours to be up on the slow cooker and was joking with my son that I accidentally set the thing to warm instead of low and realized that I did in fact accidentally set it to high.
The whole thing was mush. I cooked black bean, sweet potato, quinoa stew and it was gross. The guys ate it anyway and swore it was good. Yuck. I had a smoothie for dinner. I’m just not getting the whole slow cooker thing down. I think I’ll throw in the towel and go back to the stove where I know what I’m doing. It’s just that it’s so lovely smelling the thing cook all day, filling the house with wonderful aromas. It reminds me of the holidays for some reason. And with winter coming all those soups and stews will really warm my guys up. I don’t know maybe I shouldn’t give up. Nobodies perfect when they are learning something new. idk.

just always set the cooker temp to “low” and it won’t happen again…!! My slow cooker died and I need a new one so badly !! try making country style pork ribs in your crock pot…drain oil after cooking then cover in your favorite BBQ sauce…delicious !!

That was sweet of them to eat it anyway.

I have a slow cooker I haven’t used in probably a year or more. The only things I ever made in it were beef stew a couple times, chicken and noodles a few times, and spaghetti sauce a few times. I normally just use the stove, too.

Don’t give up, everyone ruins a dish the first few times they make it. If they don’t, they’re probably lucky!

I wouldn’t give up on the slow cooker, my grandmother makes excellent beef burgundy with it and serves it with little golden potatoes the miniature ones forgot what they are called.

Pulled pork is great in the slow cooker. The pork roast can be in the slow cooker for a long time.

some of the recipes I have call for high, some for low. I just read it wrong. They want me to try it again. I would like to see what it’s like cooked correctly. I love that it’s vegetarian and super easy to throw together. The flavor was good it was just the texture of the overcooked quinoa that was yuck for me.

I’ve never cooked ribs. I’ve only eaten them a couple of times. I bet the guys would freak out if I made them ribs. What would I look for in the store if I wanted to do that?

they should be called boneless pork ribs…they look like steaks when cooked but it’s pork !! yayyy pork.

Thank you! I won’t give up. I can’t it’s part of the meal plan for the month so I’m kind of committed.

Beef burgundy sounds interesting. I got those little potatoes for my beef stew recipe. That’s another new on I’m trying this week. Should be interesting. I usually make a cheater stew where I replace the meat with little hamburger meatballs and I can cook it in under an hour on the stove. So it’s gonna be nice to have a real stew in the slow cooker. I’m gonna be extra careful with that recipe, too good to waste.

Hey, getting the wrong setting is an easy thing to correct next time.
I’ll never forget when I was learning how to cook, I baked a beautiful loaf of Swedish Rye bread and it looked beautiful. Only when I tasted it, I discovered I had forgotten the salt. What a disappointment.:disappointed_relieved:

Didn’t the slow cooker come with instructions? Read them. Or download instructions and tips online.

I’ve made plenty of errors. The most hilarious and messy experience i have was forgetting to poke holes in my microwave potatoes. They blew up, potato was absolutely everywhere. We all make mistakes. Give it another go. Slow cooked meals are the best.

Don’t feel bad, I’ve done this too and I trained as a chef (still have my papers in a box around here somewhere). There is a real range in how slow some slow cookers actually cook. You’ll want to learn how yours behaves on days when you’re home and you can check every half hour. You’ll eventually get a feel for how it behaves and then you can let it run unattended. Don’t give up, just modify your approach a bit.
