I was using the lettuce to put on 2 small frozen burritos along with some salsa, hot sauce, Doritos and cheese and I found dead bugs on the lettuce.
My dad’s all like “well that’s not going to hurt you, just wash it off”.
I washed it off in the sink and still have found a few dead bugs as I was tearing off pieces for my dinner/lunch.
Now, my burritos with all my additions is ready to eat, but I am delaying digging in as the dead bugs thing is creeping me out. I washed off everything that I could find but the thought of eating one I missed is grossing me out.
I should have left the lettuce off. Maybe I will just pick off the lettuce and inspect the rest carefully. It’s been sitting on the table for 20 mins. I can’t decide what to do. I don’t want to waste the food but it’s grossing me out a bit.
In 2020, Hubby and I had a Siberian kale plant, in our mini garden. It was delicious, for a couple of months. But then it suddenly had a SEVERE infestation!!
The kale plant was huge… meaning it attracted many aphids. It seemed like there were a million. But anyway, it was impossible to wash all of the bugs off. They were clinging on. So, we just ripped the kale out of the garden bed and tossed it.
We also bought broccoli from the store, one day, and it, too, was infested with bugs. No amount of scrubbing and rinsing could get rid of the bugs. So, tossed it.
Anyway, I think you should toss it. Once a vegetable is covered in bugs, it’s impossible to get them all off… In my experience.
You don’t know what kind of bugs they were, and what bacteria in stool they left behind, despite washing. Could effect your digestive tract. I would toss.
I ended up picking out the lettuce and eating the remainder. I couldn’t really enjoy it though. The thought of dead bugs remained on my mind. Plus it had gotten cold and the Doritos got soggy from it sitting for so long while I contemplated what to do. Oh well.
