How many of you are on social security disability?

as far as I know ssdi is for people who have work credits ssi is not

SSI is Supplemental Security Income and is for Disabled people who are poor
SSDI is Social Security Disability Income and is for people who have work credit
You can apply for both. If your case is accepted and you donā€™t have work credits, you will get SSI (max of 772(ish) a month) If you qualify for SSDI, the amount will depend on your work credits. It could be $500 or $2500 or whatever.
With SSI, you can only have up to 2K in savings before they cut you off. With SSDI, you are allowed to have assets including savings.
You can also work PT with SSDI up to $1000(ish) a month before they will review you and get raised eyebrows that you might be able to work. You can work with SSI but for each dollar you earn, they take away .50 of your SSI. They have other work rules too.
Both programs make it REALLY hard for you to work or do anything besides live off your SSI/SSDI butā€¦then, again, they reason, if you can work FT, youā€™re not disabled and they cut you off.

If you have no work credits, you may qualify for SSI, which is for poor, disabled people. If you have assets, you wonā€™t qualify, even if you are disabled, UNTIL those assets are down to 2k or are gone.

Waitā€¦ I own a car and 1/3 of a houseā€¦ I thought under ssiā€¦ youā€™re allowed to own a car and house???

Hey 47average,

I actually live in a mental facility. The thing is I actually get more money by living in a board&care type situation than if I lived on my own. I havenā€™t seen the money, but I believe I get around $700 per month. My rent for living there is expensive. My benefits donā€™t cover my full amount. However, if I were to move out iā€™d drop to about $600. And yes Iā€™m in the U.S.

Hope that helps.

Yeah Iā€™m on it. Hoping to get off it and get more self sufficient soon. Working on it as we speak. Being on disability in Australia we are eligible for many benefits like extra money if we are in training to help get a job. Extra money to pay for our books in school etc. Looking at going back to school this/next year so looking forward to it all.

Currently applying for it. Been quite a few months since i applied. Got denied once.

I almost moved into a Residential Treatment Facility. They would take all but maybe $50 of my pay because, as you said, it costs more to live there than I get. I am glad I can function well enough to live at my Dadā€™s but when the paranoia kicks in, I still think about going there. What do you think of it? Are you happy there? I am just curious. I toured the one near my home and opted not to go that route.

Trying to get off it, but working is impossible right now.
Living on $800 a month and trying to have a life is equally impossibleā€¦
I go back to work in March, hopefully. Just part time, though.

You know what: I lied. I think you CAN have a house and a car on SSI but you canā€™t have any other assets like savings, retirement etc. You can only have up to $2K. I just remembered my aunt on SSI has a trailer and a car. You canā€™t have any money basically. It only pays 772 (ish) a month but maybe you will qualify if you can prove youā€™re disabled.

By all means, if you could get by not living in a residential facilityā€¦I would recommend it. SSI will give you more money for staying there, however for me personally living with a bunch of old people is not ideal. There are 2 people there around my age but they are both caretakers. Thereā€™s proā€™s and conā€™s in both situationsā€¦if your bad with taking the medication then I recommend an RTF. Iā€™ve been living there for 3 years & my mom wonā€™t let me come home mainly out of fear of getting sick again. But as I said SSI gave me $700 instead of $550-600 for my current livingā€¦

Iā€™m not on it, but I started the process last year.
The longest time that Iā€™ve ever had a job for was for about 6 months and that was many years ago. I live off of food stamps.

Iā€™m on it, it reduces ur stress allot and will help ur symptoms.

Iā€™m on SSI. For some reason they keep lowering my amount. They lowered my amount by $200 because they said I had ā€œincreased income.ā€ However, I donā€™t even have a job so I donā€™t know where they get that I had ā€œincreased income.ā€ I just have to go down to the Social Security office and see if I can fix things so that I can get $200 more than now.

I am on ssi 188 euro a week, and I play roulette for extra money, last week I went into the casino with 10euro and walked back out with 1000euro, big profit
