I had my first break early this year. Went to the hospital voluntarily in Feb. Will be establishing with my permanent pdoc for the first time in Jan this coming year.
How long did it take between calling attention to medical professionals of your condition before you established with your permanent pdoc?
I had to get out of the mental ward and live with my family and I got my first appt. with my permanent pdoc about two weeks later…but i had been prodromal before that for about three years then full blown psychosis for a year before that…
I think im on my 5th or 6th? Shrink over the past 25 years. Doesnt make no odds to me anyway, cos i might see them once a year. The primary nurse, which also changes every 7 months or so - deals with my day to day dramas.
The key is being compliant. No matter how much they wind you up (which is often with the NHS) - be polite and you will be taken more seriously, even tho you want to swear at them, cos your frustrated.
My GP was trying to persuade me for along time to see a psychiatrist. But I refused. I ended up very psychotic and then saw one right away. But I’d say leading up to that was a good 2 years of trying to be persuaded. I was very stubborn
Well, I saw my first doc while I was in the hospital. Dr. Deeble. He was the doctor for like 30 people, we saw him for 15 minutes every three weeks. I don’t really remember much about him except he wore a polo shirt with a patch on it from an exclusive golf club and the running joke among the patients was he always wanted to get through his list of patients as quickly as possible so he could go play golf at his club.
After I got released from the hospital I moved into a group home and they gave me a list of psychiatrists who took Medicaid and I picked one of the names off the list. I saw him within a couple of weeks and saw him for the next 6 years. He seemed like a nice guy but he never talked. I would go in there once a week and blather on for an hour while he just sat there looking at me. Occasionally I would pry a couple of words out of him.
His office was in a four story building and I remember once I smoked a bunch of crack in the bathroom there and then immediately went in for our session. He could tell I was high and politely asked me not to do that again. I was embarrassed.
Another time I went into the hospital when I was addicted to crack and he said he would only come to visit me if I was clean. I lied and said I had been clean for months but the hospital staff took a urine sample from me that I forgot about and when my doctor came to visit me the staff told him I tested positive for cocaine. That was really embarrassing too.
I had my first breakdown at age 23 but I don’t think I met with a pdoc until I was 27 or 28 or something. He was far from permanent though. I didn’t get a permanent pdoc until I was in my late 30’s. And I had been through a parade of them by then.
My first pdoc was when i was 17 and hospitalized…he was a child and adolescent psychiatrist. I had him a couple of years but when i got worse i saw the chief psychiatrist at the hospital, Dr. George Michas. I had him for many years after that, until i got tired of him doing ECT on me. Still, he was a good doctor.
i wonder if it’s just the health network i’m in. i’m also in the middle of a 6 month wait for another specialist. not hearing many other people waiting for their doctor except @MisterApple and maybe @SkinnyMe
My last pdoc went to the U.S. Mo money, less work. I’ve got an interim one who is overloaded. I’m so high functioning I just get what I ask for and am left alone because he has too many patients to see. It is what it is. I also recently lost my family doc.
