Hic Sunt Dracones (Here Be Dragons)

Something I started working on maybe 13 or 14 years ago and had written some handwritten notes on it, all of which were lost later. But I kept the major points in my head…it was supposed to be a ‘fictional’ alternate history/sci fi type story…kind of along the lines of DaVinci Code, but with a different subject matter…
(The Fra Mauro map mentioned is real, as well as what is on it… as for the rest, who knows? Never know when it could be a revelation and just not some story that came to mind over the years…)

Here Be Dragons ~

Deep within Vatican vaults was a surprise awaiting one curious priest. After discovering some of the hidden contents of the vault he made his way to Russia where he was taken in by some members of a particular Orthodox church.
What he brought with him was minuscule compared to what he had found in the Vatican vaults. Numerous photos taken with his cell phone revealed what he could not possibly bring with him.
What he did manage to take into Russia was enough: a 5 inch long Tyranosaurus tooth, not a fossil but a real tooth; the claw and 2 feathers of a raptor dinosaur, and several writings made between 780 AD and 1510 AD.
What the photos and documents showed however was much more than this.
The vaults contained many artifacts hidden from public view and knowledge.
The skull of an Allosaurus slain by knights (aka ‘dragon slayers’) in 896 AD. A parchment claimed this was the last dragon to be slain in the old world.
Several teeth of Tyranosaurus Rex, taken from at least 3 separate ‘monsters’ or ‘dragons’ in the 200 years before Christ.
The skull of a Dimetrodon.
Skull and dried hide of a Pliosaurus (‘sea monster’) harpooned in the Atlantic in 1163 AD
At least 3 horns of a Triceratops or styracosaurus dinosaur
Several claws and feathers of dromaeosaurs (raptors), as well as 2 Mummified heads of Dienonychus raptors taken in North America by Vatican sponsored explorers between 1050 AD and 1290 AD.
Scientific analysis including radiocarbon dating in Russia determined the Tyranosaurus tooth was approximately 2000 years old, and the raptor claw and feathers to be about 1000 years old. None of the artifacts were fossils, but rather real bones, claws, and teeth.
Documents revealed that after the Church learned of the Vikings journeys to North America, they set out to explore these new lands themselves and launched several missions for 250 years between 1048 and 1299 AD. In North America the explorers encountered native ‘barbarians’ as well as ‘dragons’, though the dragons were reported to be of smaller size than those previously encountered in the old world, but of the same nature and build of body. they were reported to be ‘cunning beasts of the infernal realms, ambushing men in pairs and with as much as five at one time working in unholy unison.’ That comes from a journal written in 1102 AD. It was also said that direct combat with the dragons usually ended in the death of one or more men, but that traps and snares could incapacitate the creatures that were then killed with spears and swords.
The Priest also mentions that he saw documents stating that while the Church was conducting crusades against human factions viewed as heretics or enemies, it also had a secret crusade to rid the world of ‘dragons’ and ‘sea serpents’, calling them ‘infernal creatures in league with the devil,’ and ‘creatures inhabited by devils to feast upon men.’
Further documents revealed that Columbus was sent on a mission to the new world in 1492 in order that the Church and leaders of the old world could make the existence of the lands publicly known. It was basically a cover up mission that would go into the worlds history books while the first missions that had begun over 400 years prior were secreted away and only known by a few within the Church. Apparently decrees had been given to all previous explorers to not speak of their mission on penalty of excommunication and death.
It is no wonder then that some maps of the world made prior to Columbuses journeys stated ‘Here be dragons’ or had drawings of dragons and sea monsters on them The Fra Mauro Map (1450) has the “Island of Dragons” (an imaginary island in the Atlantic Ocean.) In an inscription Fra Mauro wrote “there are a number of dragons, in whose forehead is a stone that cures many infirmities”, and describes the locals hunting the dragons to get the stones. this may be a reference to the horns or knobs on the heads of some dinosaurs, such as the Triceratops, and were perhaps used like Rhinoceros horns have been used as an Eastern medicinal for a variety of ills.
We know now the island was not imaginary, but based on previous voyages prior to the making of the map.
While the recent revelation has shaken the scientific community, the Vatican asserts that none of the priests allegations are true and that any alleged artifacts must be some sort of hoax. The priest has been officially excommunicated and defrocked, his story, denied.
