I just caught the end of one on TV and thought it was kind of funny.
They usually have like a minute long commercial for the medication and then they have like a 2 minute disclaimer of all the possible side effects. The list of side effects is almost always as long as your arm. It’s almost kind of comical. It’s like “Am I taking this med to get better or worse?”.
This is one of the reasons why I prefer to be on as few meds and as low a dose as possible.
I don’t exactly understand the commercials. Only doctors or nurse practiciners can prescribe meds as far as I know . Dentists and possibly a few others. Even if we see some commercial and are like yea these really good looking ACTORs who are so slim and happy are on these particular pills and get so excited and tell our doctor…they could say no way! So what’s the point???
Yeah, I’ve noticed that, and some of the side effects are scary. I’m on a diabetes drug called Farxiga and one of the very rare side effects is called necrotizing fasciitis, a condition where deep tissues die in the area of the genitals, basically your penis withers away and falls off. I was nervous when I started that medication, but I’ve been on it for years and so far my penis is fine, lol
“This medication might cause colon cancer, explosive diarrhea, make your head spin like Reagan in The Exorcist, and in certain cases and studies it’s been shown to cause rashes behind your eyelids.”
Had a cousin from Germany come visit us in the States some years ago. He was absolutely stunned about the direct-to-consumer advertisements of pharmaceuticals.
On a side note, he was amazed at the concept of free refills, thought the bag carousel at Wal-Mart was a genius idea, and got mad that the price tags of items on a store shelf only show the pre-tax price. Also couldn’t believe the serving portions at restaurants.
