Have any of you used an Isolation tank or sensory deprivation chamber before?

WARNING: THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE MOST APPROPRIATE TOPIC FOR THIS SITE SINCE I’VE HEARD THAT THESE CHAMBERS CAN CAUSE HALLUCINATIONS AND PERHAPS SHOULD BE USED WITH CAUTION OR NOT AT ALL FOR SOMEONE WITH A SZ DIAGNOSIS. I"M PRIMARILY INTERESTED IN THE POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS THAT SOME USERS HAVE REPORTED FOR USING THESE TANKS.

Have any of you used an Isolation tank? (otherwise known as a float tank or sensory deprivation chamber)

I’ve been considering trying to meditate and it seems like being in an environment with minimum sensory inputs would be very helpful.

I considered purchasing one when I used to have a large house to myself but they were very expensive and I didn’t want to spend that type of money for something that I might not find helpful. And now I sold my house and am living with relative so, couldn’t get one even if I was willing to spend the money, but still find myself curious about them.

I’ve heard Joe Rogan raving about how much his personal isolation tank helps him relax and helps with creativity.

My boss had one. His business involved hot tubs, massage, “Rolfing” a sushi bar, and the isolation tank. He normally charged customers about $30 or $40.00 for an hour in the isolation tank but he let me use it for free two or three times.

I hate to say it but it did nothing for me. It was comfortable and relaxing and it was pretty neat floating like that for an hour, but I didn’t really get any other benefits from it. By the way, I heard about the hallucinations, and I was a little wary but once I got in, I was not scared at all. The only thing I hated about those things was that I had to clean them!! After a customer was done I had to go in the room where the tank was to wipe up the salt that got everywhere.

Incidentally, we got a few famous people that came in to use the tank. A few players from the San Francisco Giants baseball team used to come in. They used the tank to improve their baseball skills. Our tank had a minatature movie screen installed so while the baseball players were floating they could watch movies of themselves at bat and in the solitude they could see what mistakes they were making and they could learn how to raise their batting average. I just thought that was kind if neat.

Somehow I knew you were going to be one of the few people on here to have ever used one!

Due to the west coast vibe and the fact that you’ve seemed to have experienced so much in your life.

never used an isolation or sensory deprivation tank, but I think it could work well for some.
I love MRI’s The sound is like beating drums and blocks out all other noise for me including my voices. It is also a small, closed environment which for me is a ‘safe place’.

I was embedded in the MRI machine and I felt like I was going to throw up. It wasn’t because of the procedure, it was just a medical problem I had. But I was terrified of throwing up because once you’re in the machine movement is very limited and to get you out it takes about 30 seconds. I was terrified that I would choke to death on my own vomit before they could extract me. Another pleasant story by 77nick77 to tell the kids around the dinner table.

Think the last thing I need is more isolation.

I was just gonna say I isolate myself enough as it is when I’m not feeling well. Lol

It’s good to hear that I’m not the only person that prefers small places! They’re so cozy!
