Good news is, I got the job. But here's the bad news

Employee should be made aware that ____ may observe content and information made publicly available by employees on social media. Employees should use their best judgement to avoid posting material that is vulgar, sexually explicit or pornographic, obscene, threatening, intimidating, knowingly or recklessly false, or a violation against the company’s policies against discrimination, harassment, or hostility on account of a legally protected class or status or characteristic such as race, age, or disability.

There’s 3 pages to their policy. You basically can’t post ANYTHING job-related, even if you do or don’t mention anyone’s full name, or this company’s name, and also, ‘relationships’ of any kind in a negatively light, with or without a full name.

I’m not sure as an artist, a free spirit, a big mouth, an activist, an overall bad ass, a recovering alcoholic, a truth-keeper, and a general Fu-ck Ya spirit, that I’m going to be able to sign this.

I’m going to give it until sometime tomorrow to decide.

I wouldn’t feel the need to share work stuff. I can see why you’d be worried but I’d be inclined to sign. Not a big deal for me.

I can see that point, but if I’m feeling violated, in ANY way, I do take to social media to air my grievances.

they don’t say what will happen to you, but I have already violated these policies, ha.

I use fb and things to keep in touch with friends and family and the cricket club. Some things I don’t share or comment about. It’s one of those things. Do the job. If they catch you out they probably could terminate you…I know it’s an invasion of privacy but I’ve worked places with policies like that. Maybe not three pages worth of stuff but you just kept some things to yourself.

are you holding back out a general disgust over people who do so, share everything and don’t follow keeping everything to yourself?

I’ve been writing my feelings, and my life, for decades.

Then Facebook came along.

am I to blame for this current tech we’re all using?

and wow, all this for having a name.

I thought we gave up reputations after high school.

it’d really cheer me up to listen to some Punk playlist on You Tube. think I will.

I know how incredibly hard it must be for you to sign a form like that. I would highly recommend setting your profile to friends only, or at least friends-locking any posts you make that might violate the policy. A better choice would be to not make those posts in the first place, but that might feel too harsh amd stifling.

yeah, I’m torn still. These are sort of underwritten things to social media, I’m still am not sure they can enforce anything, and I bet if they fired me over it, I’d stand a chance if I fought them.

I guess I would be somewhat concerned that with an extensive three-page policy like this, your employer might go out of their way to actively monitor their employees’ social media. That would feel overbearing and invasive to me if I were one of their employees.

I’ve seen employees get fired for social media posts before. It is fully legal.

Don’t expect to ever be employable again, then. This is now a feature of all employment relationships.

I have experience for this job, and credentials beyond that, good references, and a great attitude, and the interview went well.

nah. this is just what they do to movers and shakers.

And this is America.

You keep telling yourself that.
