R. Lee Ermey was a consultant on the set of Full Metal Jacket.
He had such a commanding presence that Stanley Kubrick cast him in the role he was consulting for.
He’s a Marine Corps legend.
For being in incredible film and for his actual service to his country.
Here’s the story.
My uncle was a fairly high ranking Marine and was at a formal event where R. Lee Ermey was being honored.
Some of my uncle’s marine friends dared him to “bust a move” in front of R. Lee Ermey.
So my uncle, being an idiot, walked right up to his table and started doing “the robot”.
No one thought it was funny except the snickering friends in the background.
Ermey looked at him and then looked right back at the people at his table, ignored the whole rest of “the robot” moves.
When my uncle was young, he told this story all the time,
Now he tries to change the details and makes it seem like it didn’t really happen that way,
Who knows!
Happy Birthday R. Lee Ermey!!
You gave us some of the best scenes in cinema!

I appreciate the story.
@Wave,
He’s gotta be the drill sargeant in the first part of the movie, the best part, in my opinion. Context clues suggest, unless I’m wrong.
I need to revisit the movie for a greater appreciation of war. I think I saw it too young.

You should mention that he died just three years ago. He appeared in 60 films and had a number of television appearances.

I met him a few times. He did Marine Corps balls a lot. Great guy.
I met Carlos Hathcock at a Marine Corps ball once also. He was a famous sniper in Vietnam. Had like 400 confirmed kills.
