Poor. It’s been 44 years since I last did French at school. I forgot practically all of it after my first breakdown.

That’s quite a big vocabulary size! Congratulations!
I could probably work out the meanings of the words much more than I could speak French off the cuff. I’d completely struggle to hold a conversation in French.
That first breakdown really did a number on me. I also forgot much of the history I was taught. The ECT I received early on in my illness may have contributed to making things worse.

I think you can be grateful for what you can keep intact after the ECT therapy.
It is not surprising for someone to have better writing skill than speaking skill. Elementary vocabulary is the basics of any language, IMO. Therefore, I still think you are doing well.
