Dual Diagnosis: Definition & Treatment

I joined a dual diagnosis group around 1993 or '94 through the mental health clinic near my board & care. I was already in AA but my therapist recommended this group. It sucked, this one guy thought he was cooler than everybody else and took up most of the time telling war stories of addiction. No one else had chance to talk, the whole experience disgusted me.

My cousin was in a dual diagnosis unit in a psychiatric hospital. I think the admission was for over a year in total. Very long stays here.

I get judged for having a dual diagnosis. My nurse said I’d never quit smoking just because of the substance use disorder label and then the medication helped me and now I’m free. Feels a bit wrong

I hate it when medical professionals use the word ‘never’. You never know what the future brings.

I agree. Statistical nuance should be carried over into their use of language especially with serious health matters like a condition like schizophrenia

Yeah it’s individual and you’ve got to want to get off. Nicotine is a crazy beast and I needed that medical help too. I’ve drunk a lot too and regular but would never be considered an alcoholic in a clinical sense but it’s affected my life so is that any different? I think without it I could have made a better life in hindsight but the chemicals are hard things if your diagnosed with a mental illness like sz anyways.

Like any addictions or habits it’s hard work and it’s often a lifetimes work. It really is in my book.
