Hi! Welcome to the forum, @Turtle44!
I still drive, but I usually don’t drive further than 30 minutes from my house. I also have schizoaffective disorder (bipolar type).
I drive fine even long distances.
Welcome @Turtle44. I first started driving when I was 17. I got diagnosed at age 19 and took a few years off from driving. Start driving again when I was about 23 or 24. Drove until I was about 29. Then I moved into a board & care home and the owners didn’t allow anyone to have a car. I got a car and started driving again when I was about 36 and I have been driving steadily since and I’m 60 now.
I have gotten several tickets and been in several accidents but only one was serious; unfortunately it was my fault. But no one got hurt and it just put a dent in my car and the car I hit and my insurance covered the damages. I’m pretty comfortable driving, I used to occasionally drive to Sacramento to visit my dad about 10 years ago; it was about 200 miles to get there. I’ve made smaller trips since then.
Actually a lot of people on here have driven great distances while having schizophrenia; I don’t know if any of them will answer this thread but if you’re curious you could always start a thread asking people what’s the furthest they’ve driven while schizophrenic. The answers might surprise you.
Just stay away from weed and alcohol. They almost got me into accidents in the past.
I’m SZA depressive type and I don’t drive anymore
Thanks everyone for your replies, I think mine is anxiety related, I hope the nerves go away after I drive a bit, I have been over thinking it.
Just take it slow at first and drive carefully until you’re used to it.
Initially driver was fine. But over time my processing speed lowered so sever I couldn’t really drive past 50 miles per hour without issue.
For me the solution was mindfulness meditation. It can actually double a person’s processing speed. After that driving fast is much more bearable.
I’ve driven the Alcan Highway thru Canada and Alaska several times, twice from Florida to Alaska…no problems except reminding myself to stop and sleep at times. I’ve never had any issues with driving related to SZA, but on certain meds I won’t drive right after taking them cuz of drowsiness…
My DX is now paranoid schizophrenia and I’ve been driving for decades now, clean record. I also have a professional license for buses and heavy trucks with three axles or less.
@shutterbug Great for you. How bigger the car how better I think. But maybe better being on the money to drive cheap?
I don’t have the concentration to drive unfortunately, so I don’t. I’m diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
I am 74 years old and never stopped driving.
Schizoaffective depressive type here.
I still drive from time to time, and maintain my license. My car hardly gets used anymore though.
I try to judge my ability on a day to day basis on how bad my symptoms are. There have been plenty of times that it’s been perfectly fine, other times I’ll see mangled corpses on the side of the roads.
Welcome to the forum!
Omg I’m so sorry that has to be horrible!
Oh it’s no worries, just my stupid brain glitching, lol
I’m not sure what you mean? Bigger vehicles are better?
