I’m on a round of Doxycycline for my acne and I’ve noticed that I’ve become depressed and really irritable (but my face has cleared up and looks great!). I’m back to crying everyday. But then I’ve also titrated down my AP/mood stabilizer Saphris, but the symptoms have been going on since before that. I’ve been ruminating on things, thinking about the future and all the bad things that are going to happen. I’m going to stop taking it even though the course of treatment is not over with.
Anyone else experience this with antibiotics?

OV Atigari, C Hogan and D Healy,
BMJ case reports , Dec 2013 17
A case series outlining three young individuals with no history of mental disorder who were treated for skin conditions with doxycycline, but developed suicidal ideation with an outcome of suicide in two of the cases. One of these individuals had CYP2C19*2 heterozygote genotype associated with a diminished cytochrome p450 enzyme activity and two of his siblings had developed severe anxiety previously while on doxycycline. Another had previously developed mood difficulties on a lower dose of doxycycline which resolved after discontinuation. In the third individual, a discontinuation of doxycycline has led to the resolution of symptoms without the need for psychotropic medications.

Yes, sometimes an antibiotic is hard on me. My doctors do not really hear me when I say that either!

I hope that you feel better, sometimes antibiotics cause unwanted side effects, especially among the mentally ill
