Dopamine and emotions

When I got sz even before diagnosis I felt a reduction of my emotions and ability to show affection not only romantic love. With meds it got worse. I stopped meds for 2yrs 2014-2016, my emotions and ability to show affection came back although not as strong as before sz. Taking dopamine or using stimulants bring back my emotions as strong as before sz but they give me psychosis. I read that stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin are used to treat apathy. I wish they didn’t make psychosis worse. I want to give Wellbutrin another try, I had more emotions on it but it made me angry I think because it increases dopamine by a bit.

Did you feel a reduction of emotions following sz?

I feel like I’m Mr Spock :vulcan_salute: from star trek. My emotions seemed to disappear around 17 though.

Did you try Wellbutrin? My pdoc prescribed it to me for negative symptoms like apathy etc it helped but it made me angry and stopped me from using nicotine as its also used for smoking cessation. So I stopped it but I want to try it again as last time I was on it I was on 3mg risperidone, now I am on 6mg.

It interacts with Abilify

Talk to your doctor before using buPROPion together with ARIPiprazole. Combining these medications may increase the risk of seizures, which may occur rarely with either medication. In addition, buPROPion can increase the blood levels of ARIPiprazole, which may increase other side effects

I don’t really know, but I would guess that the reason you become angry is because the neurotransmitters are unbalanced. You raise dopamine, but still have low serotonin and gaba and other types of neurotransmitters. If you only raise dopamine while the others are low the transmitters don’t interact with each other the way they are supposed to. That’s my five cents anyway.

That explains why my dr didn’t prescribe it when I was on Abilify.

I took 5htp, it made me manic. it increases serotonin like ADs. I think if the med acts on neurotransmitters concentration there might be an imblance but not if the med directly binds to the receptor without affecting neurostransmitters concentration. APs act directly on the receptors so they don’t deplete nt. Too much Ldopa depletes serotonin I read and too much 5htp depletes dopamine
