Dog dental work

My 13 year old Shih Tsu really needs his teeth cleaned. I can’t afford it. A low cost vet quoted me $1000. The vet school at Michigan state university quoted the same. I feel so bad for my dog. Anyone here with dog(s) have to forego teeth cleanings as well?

It’s not good to get teeth cleaned for a dog that old. They have to put them out. The procedure is risky.

Try some dental sticks for bad breath.

Maybe a private party can do it for cheaper? Does it involve using a bunch of expensive tools or could an experienced private party do it with a few tools you can pick up anywhere? I don’t really know what’s involved in cleaning a dogs teeth. Or find a vet that takes hardship cases and would do it for cheaper. Or maybe find a vet that would clean the dogs teeth and let you make small monthly payments until it’s paid off.

I am so sorry…maybe you can brush the teeth yourself?

He gets one every morning. The vet said he has dental disease though. Grade 3. :frowning:

I can but he needs his gums cleaned out and some teeth extractions most likely. I do brush his teeth but he chews the toothbrush so I’m not sure how much good I’m doing

Try some antibiotics if he or she hss infections in his mouth.

Still the teeth cleaning is only like $300 where I live. I had both of my dogs done recently. It wasn’t too bad. That price they are giving you is expensive.

One of my elderly cats had to have 8 teeth pulled and that was very expensive. We got a Care credit card account to pay for it. You can use it for vet bills.

ohhh if he needs extractions now I see why it would cost so much…so sorry. don’t know what to say now.

Look for a nearby college with vet school. They often provide care free or low cost.

I never had any of my various dog’s teeth cleaned.
Use dental chews @LilyoftheValley

Wow. My vet charges 1500 for it. The other vets in the area charge the same. But an hour away they quote 1000. I’ll talk to the vet about antibiotics. Thanks for thinking of that @Phrogflyer

@LilyoftheValley That’s really expensive. My Dogs are 5 and 6 and they both needed cleanings last year. I got them both done at the same time. It wasn’t nearly that expensive.

Already do. And I brush his teeth but he chews the brush while I’m doing it so it’s not very effective.

@anon4362788 MSU vet clinic quoted $1000. I think I’m going to do like @Phrogflyer suggested and simply ask for antibiotics for now. It might help along with brushing his teeth and giving him dental chews every morning.

The vet said my dog needs his teeth cleaned too but i can’t afford it either.

I want to give him the best but there’s no way I can afford it.
