My family are so over familiar with me. They think they can say things to me which are hurtful because in their eyes I am not required to be given the same respect as a normal person.

I’m a pretty assertive guy. But that doesn’t seem to matter where family are concerned. And now that I think about it, it’s annoying me.

I’m pretty strict with my parents. They need that or else they will misbehave. :roll_eyes: It’s worked well for me.

Yesss!! I very much relate.
My family sometimes say hurtful and disrespectful things to me, and it’s all because I am mentally ill.

They treat my brother with a lot more respect.

I phoned my mum and asked if her and dad could stop by my house for an hour on Xmas morning. Just them two because I don’t want to go to a big gathering.

Mum got all angry and dad was spouting poison in the background. ‘Why can’t you just go round to your sisters?!’ All heated like.

They do this when they feel guilty about something and instead of saying sorry they get angry instead.

My community mental health team tried to provide my parents group therapy so they could learn better coping strategies. But mum and dad weren’t prepared to engage with that

My family is the same way. I have a “perfect” sister everyone loves, and another sister, who like me gets treated like we are worth less. We are the problem. She was a drinker and addict and had depression and anxiety that required treatment. And then me, who needs psych services. It really sucks. My perfect sister introduced me to her friends at her Christmas party about 8 years ago as the nanny, not as her sister. It really hurt, but I should be used to that by now.

Yeah. This thread is really winding me up actually. My family are so petty it’s unreal.

On the bright side I don’t have a family of my own.
