I was just wondering if it’s possible for mental illness severity to skip generations. My dad and I are both schizoaffective but he was diagnosed after me and he worked for years before copd made it so he can’t work anymore. Could I be worse off than him?

it is a bit like the cancer gene …not everyone gets cancer.

The short answer is “Yes.” Genetics working the way they do, one can “carry” the genes for sz and never “catch” it because the environment was benign enough not to set it off. It’s all “nature and nurture.” I have seen at least fifty cases where the psychotic disorders skipped a generation.
