My doctor told that to me.
“Destroy” is a bit dramatic. Are you sure those are the words he/she used?
But yes, I’ve heard before that some people believe that psychosis damages the brain. I don’t think everyone is in agreement on that though. Been awhile since I looked at it. Dont remember specifics.
But I remember some articles talking about a neurotoxicity created.
It wasn’t the exact words but something that means that
Probably best to trust your pdoc on this one. Even if you can recover from damage from psychosis, as some believe, its best not to chance it and avoid it anyway.
To give you my experience. I was through psychosis a lot and it negatively affected my cognition, to the point where I got really stupid compared to where I was before.
When I was at an institution for 3 months, I reversed the effects of the psychosis completely, and I felt very capable cognitively again.
So in my experience a lot of psychosis can make your cognition worse, but in my case - and it’s probably true for others as well - your brain can heal itself.
I don’t think mild psychosis does much damage, I’m gonna guess it’s probably the more severe psychotic episodes that have a negative impact.
That makes sense. Idk why my doctor told me that I should be on meds (because the possible brain damage) I agree that I should be on meds but maybe not because of the brain damage since my psychosis was mild
Psychosis crosses “mild” when it effects your level of functioning. Mine wasn’t mild and for this reason I had to be admitted. Psychosis (don’t take my word for it) probably causes some brain damage if treatment isn’t adhered to.
Sorry I don’t know why I revived this post. It just came up on my feed.
