Doctors investigate mystery brain disease in Canada

“Mystery Brain Disease”

In Canada, this illness makes you want to be a Politician.

OK. Please hang on while I think about this.

This sounds really similar to what I have. But if it’s not hereditary, then what is it? Mine is genetic. But this is very similar to what I have.

It’s some sort of brain disease. If it’s not brain disease, they have to look at motor neuron diseases.

The only difference is that the brain component only occurs in complicated forms of my condition, which impacts 25% of those affected. This is 100% brain involvement…

Huh. This is really weird.

As a hypochondriac, this scares me!

Were you in that area of Canada? Because it is probably linked to some pathogen or toxic substance in that area so unless you were there it is probably unrelated.

No, I came back to Korea 5 years ago. I have very little brain involvement other than cognitive issues and psychosis. Otherwise, my symptoms are limited to my legs presenting with stiffness, gait issues, and limited mobility. To qualify for the dx criteria, you must have a sign of motor neuron damage like exaggerated knee reflex. But it sounds like people with this condition don’t have exaggerated reflexes, which makes me more puzzled. If these people all had hyperreflexia (exaggerated reflex) they would have thought this was genetic or a type of ALS.

Edit: I’m forwarding this article to my community to see what they think.

The neurological symptoms for a lot of disorders are very similar. It is probably because many of the same areas and processes are affected. The cause is probably different.

Yeah, there are so many brain diseases out there- it’s difficult to understand what is what. I’m curious as to see what my community would think about this.

I remember quite some years ago there was a concern that humans might be getting a form of C-J from eating deer. I think this was in the Midwest in the US. I’m not sure if this was just a hypothesis or if anything more definitive was ever proven.

EDIT: I googled it and found this:

This reminds me of the Planet of the Apes trilogy where humans develop a brain condition that stupefies homo sapiens for the monkeys to rise to fruition.

Art mirrors life… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Many people in my rare disease community believe that this is neurological in nature but they couldn’t tell if this was a motor neuron disease or this is just something in similar nature of CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease).

Again, we’re just bunch of people with motor neuron diseases with different levels of cognition.
