In my home town in the USA there was several square miles that was a state mental institution. I was a patient there many times. They had everything from cafeterias to a library, a store,a church, a movie theater, a barber, a game room, canteens, an indoor basketball court, a greenhouse, a music room, many wards, and many other things for the very sick. They closed it completely recently and sold the land, like they did all over the country because it was defunded which began in the Nixon era. I have no doubt I’d be there today if it were open for I am very sick with sza. I live alone in an apartment and take care of myself… because I have to, I haven’t sunk as far down as I would have, which is the good thing, for me. I often want it to still be there. I won’t get locked up for long now, in the USA they don’t do that, they push you out the doors, unless you commit a violent crime and then you go to jail. My worst fear is being homeless because I know I’d go to jail, unless I’m wrong. I would not have my guitar or mandolin in jail nor YouTube. Do you ever miss those days? A lot of them were very bad places, but some were nice to be in. They got better in the sixties with the advent of anti psychotic medicine but that may be why they could close. I really think it was a money issue. Is it the same story in your country?
I’ve been in a couple of places for the mentally ill about 8 - 10 years ago. I think they were semi-state and semi-private. It wasn’t plush there by any means, but they were still pretty good. It looked to me like they did the best they could with limited resources. I haven’t been in any of those places in about a decade. I don’t know what they’re like now. Budget concerns can change those places. All the same, I want to stay out of those places, even if they aren’t so bad.
