It’s about $3 for 12 bananas here in Colorado. So I guess I’m talking about farmers and I’m not exactly sure where they are grown. It doesn’t seem like you could make much money off them. The people in the nut business might be racking in the dough however.

Bananas are not grown in the States or Europe.
They are grown in Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Few are exported.

Trader Joe’s sells bananas individually (19 cents each). Years ago an elderly lady wanted to buy bananas, but she didn’t have the money to buy a bunch of bananas (they sold bananas by the pound). A kind manager felt bad for the elderly lady and told the story to his boss, eventually reaching the CEO.
They grow banana’s in Australia. A big cyclone can do a lot of damage and sometimes it does happen where banana’s get really expensive!

I just realized this morning I’ve been buying Chiquita bananas. They got a 6 out of 20 on @Ninjastar’s chart. I might have to rethink this.
They’re known for mistreating their workers. Buying ethical food is really a challenge. It can be overwhelming.
