Do you have to force yourself to practice a musical instrument?

For those musicians I have trouble some days picking up my guitar and practicing it. I want to sit back and do nothing whatsoever or read which is the successful way to do nothing. Once I start my practice I’m into it but I am so old and burned out I just don’t want to do Anything. I wonder how worthwhile life can be being so burned out but I can play pretty good and it’s worth something. I play classical music mostly as I can read music in F, C, G, D, A, and E. I don’t encounter much music in other keys. What about you? Do you ever have trouble getting around to it?

I realize that I’m working harder at it than I can actually realize. Sometimes I’m busting ass!

I sold this a couple months ago. I had pads on every piece to dampen the sound. I had nowhere to practice and no one to play with so I decided to sell it. I was playing a little, but with my sleep schedule I missed a lot of opportunities to practice. I figured if I really wanted to play I’d have played more. Some people it seems can’t put their instrument down. I was never like that.

When I was busy being a drunk I had a hard time picking up the banjo but if I stay away from the beer I look forward to my time with the banjos and don’t want to quit. I love them and they are my instruments of choice.

My guitar sits hung up ive used it twice in the last year.

I kinda have to force everything though. Playing guitar, biking, eating, pooping. You know just everything

When I feel like playing, I play. When I don’t feel like it, I don’t play.
I don’t force anything.

Let’s just say if I weren’t on SSI and not working I’d keep my day job.

You need to force yourself for that?

I do the same for everything. It comes naturally, anyways I don’t believe you can force anything. Its just that some people like to call what comes naturally forcing, dunno why.

I have trouble playing the drums, but I have hope I will get better in the future.

Why not aim for just 5 minutes per day? After a while if you want to play more you can change it to mroe or whatever, but just keep it to 5 minutes per day for a while to establish the habit. You can do anything for 5 minutes. Anyways just an idea

For 16 years, I’ve had to force myself to sit down and practice piano five days a week and every year it’s been a struggle. It’s only just now beginning to get a tiny bit easier because of reduced Risperdal Consta depot.

Yes. I play the drums. I was playing like six months ago and had to force myself to sit down and do it. Sure.

It is definitely a lot harder now than it was last year. I play guitar and keyboard (kind of self-taught) and for a while I was able to really get my feelings out through improvisation but I have barely touched the guitars in a long time though I come up with stuff on the keyboard from time to time but it’s fewer and farther between.

Forcing yourself to play is the only way to burn through it honestly. I have been forcing myself to do more music work on the computer but I can barely keep up with that too.

@annadonna94 what is the difference between this year and last year?

And for all those 16 years, it seemed like no matter how much I practiced, I never got any better. Now that I’m on 25 mg of Risperdal Consta (instead of 37.5 mg), I feel like the piano playing is coming a bit easier.

And I’m very excited to lower the dose even more. Unfortunately my pdoc told me that would come in terms of years, not weeks or even months.
